Frequently Asked Questions About RCD Testing

How often should RCDs be professionally tested?

Commercial properties need testing every 12 months by law. For homes, we recommend annual professional testing, though you should press the test button yourself every 3 months. Rental properties require testing whenever tenants change.

What happens during an RCD test?

We use specialised testing equipment to check your safety switch trips at the correct current level (30mA for standard RCDs). Test the trip time – must be under 300 milliseconds. Check all circuits are protected. Takes about 20 minutes per switchboard.

Do all powerpoints need RCD protection?

In Queensland, all powerpoint circuits must have RCD protection. Same goes for lighting circuits in newer homes built after 2000. Older homes might only have partial coverage – we can upgrade this for you.

What’s the difference between a circuit breaker and an RCD?

Circuit breakers protect your wiring and appliances from overload and short circuits. RCDs protect people from electric shock. You need both. An RCD detects tiny leakages of current that could flow through a person.

Can I test RCDs myself?

You can (and should) press the test button every 3 months. But this only checks the mechanical parts work. Professional testing checks the electronic components, trip times, and sensitivity levels. DIY testing doesn’t replace proper electrical testing.
